Chair of ALSO UK Awarded OBE
Professor Paul Lewis was recently been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday honours list for his contribution to Mothers, to Midwives and to UK Maternity Services.
Paul has been an ALSO Instructor since 1996, and has continued to teach on ALSO Provider and Instructor Courses throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland over the last 20 years. He was appointed to our Advisory Faculty and subsequently elected to the Executive Board. In March 2015, he became the first midwife to be elected to the Chair of ALSO (UK)’s Executive Board of Trustees.
The OBE was given for Paul’s contribution to the health and wellbeing of mothers, the education, practice and advancement of midwives and in working to improve the quality and effectiveness of maternity services both locally and nationally. Paul said he was particularly pleased that his role with ALSO (UK) was noted in his citation and he had gained considerably from being a part of a global, dynamic and friendly organisation.
Paul stressed that the award was not his alone and reflected the support and encouragement from family and friends but in particular, all those I have worked with in the NHS, Higher Education and in ALSO (UK). They gave me the support, the time and the opportunities and have played a significance part in the award of my OBE”.
Paul led midwifery education at Bournemouth University from 1995 up to his retirement in October 2011. He was subsequently awarded an Emeritus role at the University in recognition of his work and his on-going support teaching current students on the midwifery and paramedic programmes within the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences. Paul has worked with Local and National Bodies for the improvement of maternity services. He is also an Editorial Board Member for the British Journal of Midwifery and reviewer for the International Journal of Nursing Studies.
Professor Lewis received the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire award at Windsor Castle on the 25th November 2015.
